The Weekend Read

Everything is on the table in our recurring weekend newsletter. Will you learn something about furniture? Perhaps! Some design tips? Likely! Maybe something else? Frequently! Will we soullessly shill products? We will not. Scout's honor!

3/19/26 In Praise Of British Design Why does so much impactful design come out of the UK, and what are the reasons for the difference between what we see more commonly in the US? It turns out there are some very real explanations for the disparity between British and American home design. British residential interiors genuinely do exhibit more layering, color, and character than typical American interiors, and much of this is attributable to differences in the houses, culture, and psychology.
2/14/26 On Never Finding A Color Match As the saying goes, "There's someone out there for everyone." As an optimist and romantic, I agree ? when we're talking about people. That same optimism does not extend to matching colors between materials, sadly.

What To Look For In Durable Fabric For Your Luxury Sofa

Luxury furniture is about more than just how your sofa looks, or even how it sits. It should last. Here's how to find fabric for your sofa that will stand up to use — and why it's more complex than you've been led to believe.

What's a pocket coil suspension system?

Why are we so in love with them? Why should you care? And why are they a better choice than the other options on the market?

There Is No Such Thing as "The Best Sofa"

Every once in a while, a blog or review site publishes a list of "the best sofas." Every single one of these is wrong. Let me explain why.

What's an 8-way hand-tied suspension?

What's an 8-way hand-tied suspension system and why should I care? First of all, a suspension system on your sofa is the set of springs that sit beneath the cushions beneath that black fabric that's underneath the cushions.

On Boneless Sofas

Every few years, the furniture world decides it has reinvented the sofa. This time around, it's the boneless sofa — a bold new idea that asks: "What if we made furniture, but a little bit less?"

In Praise Of British Design

It turns out there are some very real explanations for the disparity between British and American home design. British residential interiors genuinely do exhibit more layering, color, and character than typical American interiors, and much of this is attributable to differences in the houses, culture, and psychology.

On Never Finding A Color Match

As the saying goes, "There's someone out there for everyone." As an optimist and romantic, I agree — when we're talking about people. That same optimism does not extend to matching colors between materials, sadly.

On The Color Of Light

Oh bother. The process of designing a piece of customer furniture for your home comes with a long list of decisions to make, not the least of which is color. But one of the biggest factors that determines how you perceive a color is often forgotten: how a room is lit.
